For those of you who know me, you know that Winter is not my favorite time of the year. I’m already counting down the days until spring and warm weather. I’m a wimp when it comes to driving in the snow so usually we don’t leave the house for a day or two until all the roads are clear. I’m always looking for ways to stay busy at home with a toddler and having fun with him makes my day, including having “shower parties” where you can put your bathing suit on and both play in the water which kills at least an hour! 🙂
Well, this time last week I had just finished spending 3 consecutive days at home during the last snow storm that hit and for the first time I was thankful to be snowed in because it was the perfect opportunity to do the 3 Day Potty Training program from the Queen of Potty Training herself, Lora Jensen. A little background – I had started potty training with Luke a couple months ago (he turned two Dec. 7th) and it was the “take them to the bathroom every 10 minutes” technique which I know has worked for some kids but Luke HATED it. He couldn’t have been more frustrated to be so interrupted during his day and let’s face it – toddlers have that “control” issue where they all want to do it their way and in their time. (Well, I guess that’s ALL kids under the age of 18 actually!) We also tried moving his little potty into our living room because he didn’t want to be taken away from playing. This was equally as frustrating for him. I understand that he was “early” for potty training as this was just before his 2nd birthday so I just thought he wasn’t ready and came to the realization that it might be another year in diapers before he was “ready”.
Then I came across the 3 Day Potting Training program and I spent hours reading reviews and hearing about all these kids who were potty trained successfully with this program without nagging, forcing or bribing their children. What I love most about the program is how loving, caring and supportive it is for your kids. It is NOT a potty training boot camp. It’s a kind, loving and positive approach to teach your kids how to self regulate and learn how to control themselves. They tell you when they “need to go” to the bathroom, you don’t take them or tell them when to use the potty which I strongly believe is one of the many aspects of this technique that allow it to be so successful! I was sure Luke was going to be one of those boys who don’t “get it” until the end of the 3rd day but by the end of the first day he caught on and we haven’t touched a diaper in nearly 10 days!
Be prepared, because Lora’s program doesn’t want you to use pull ups, training pants or night time diapers….at all. You make the switch and that’s it. I do agree with her that it is easier to do it all at once and there’s no doubt in my mind that if I were a toddler and had an easy “out” with a pull up that I would absolutely use it! My mom reminds me of the time when I was Luke’s age and fully potty trained when she couldn’t get me to a bathroom on the airplane that I went in my underwear and how devastating it was for me and it caused me to regress significantly. I can see where it would be very confusing for kids to do all that work with them and tell them “don’t potty in your underwear” and then put a diaper on them at night. The important thing to remember here is that they are old enough to learn how to control themselves at night too, yes there’s a learning curve but that learning curve will be short lived compared to many years worth of bed wetting accidents if you teach them healthy sleep habits early on. Yes, some kids are heavier sleepers than others but she addresses this too and ways to help teach them at night also.

Some things worth noting, Lora doesn’t recommend potty training before the age of 22 months, from her own personal experience. Be sure, very sure that you are ready to potty train your kid(s) because it takes 100% commitment from you to follow through to make it work. Lora gives you all the tools you need to be prepared and successful, she offers amazing customer support and much valued experience to help you if you have any questions along the way.
So the end result? If you really want to potty train in an efficient, non stressful, positive, uplifting and loving way in 3 days – I would recommend it, it DOES work! If you like having the security of using a diaper from time to time, including at night I’m not sure this program is for you as you do need to be committed for it to work, because it will take much longer than 3 days… but just think of ALL those diapers and pull ups that you’ll be saving from going into the landfill?!
