We almost always eat at home every day during the week but we’ve been known to go out for a meal or two during the weekend. I always try to carry a few things in my purse to “distract” Luke while we’re waiting for our food and at times can get pretty creative with the things I pull out of my purse. Side note: why does it feel like my purse is a mess again as soon as I clean it out?! If things are really desperate I will give Luke my iPhone which has just a couple games for him on it, including a Cat In The Hat book that reads to him which always gives me at least 10 minutes! (What do you keep in your purse that keeps the kids happy?!)
Yesterday, we went to a cute place in Loveland and I was pretty disappointed with the food. I find that I’m almost always disappointed with the kids menus when we’re eating out. I feel like kids seem to be an after thought for most restaurants and I really don’t get it. We were at Buffalo Wild Wings on Friday and I couldn’t believe they don’t offer anything healthy for the kids menu. We were offered french fries, potato wedges or onion rings. Seriously? (It’s worth noting, however that the waiter told me they were going to be changing the menu and fruit and veggies will be offered for kids! YAY! Also, they do have the “naked chicken tenders” for kids which I’ve heard great things about if you’re looking for food that tastes great and won’t kill your kids if you want to splurge!)
My biggest pet peeve is when they give us canned fruit. I went to The Breakfast Club in Lebanon (which doesn’t let you take your strollers in and does not have anywhere to change diapers by the way) and I asked for a side of fruit for Luke and we got a bowl of canned fruit. What I couldn’t understand is seeing our plates come out with fresh fruit on the top of the omlettes, pancakes etc. So why did they think it was okay to give canned fruit to the kiddos? I want fresh food when we go out to eat!
One of my favorite places to splurge is Chilis! They had GREAT ribs when I was there last with an amazing brown sugar rub – yum! And guess what?! They have a pretty good kids menu too! There are lots of choices for kids and their first choice for a side dish is: fresh pineapple….thank you! A few others they offer include: Cinnamon Apples, Rice, Sweet Corn on the Cob, Corn Kernels, Mandarin Oranges. Interested in some free chips and queso dip next time you stop in to Chilis?
And if you’re looking for a healthy lunch choice when you’re on the go – grab a healthy sub sandwich from Quiznos! My favorite is the veggie sandwich! Here’s a coupon for $2.99 for any small sub!
Where is your favorite place to eat with kids? Where do you go that you’ve noticed has a great kids menu?!
