So often we run ourselves in to the ground so much that we don’t even realize it until it’s too late. As Moms, we’re busy running in so many different directions taking care of our families that it feels like we rarely every take time for ourselves and even when we do we’re busy thinking about what we need to be doing.
I take my computer with me almost everywhere in the hopes that if I get even 10 minutes of “free time” I’ll pull it out and start “working” on one thing or another. And if I don’t have my computer I always have my trusted iPhone to at least catch up on emails. (Crazy, I know.)
Do you realize how difficult it is to put everything down and even just take 5 minutes to “clear your mind”. Seriously, try it. It’s hard. My mind is always racing with “Oh, I forgot to do that!” “I need to make a list for that” etc, etc. If I’m not physically “working” on something than I’m mentally “working” on something and with my latest quest to de-stress and detox my body (much more to come next week on this topic!) this is something I’m trying to make a real effort to do each day.
My husband surprised me and came home with a real treat last week – a gift certificate to my favorite spa for a mani & pedi! My immediate thought was…”great! I can take my laptop and work in peace and quiet” then it went to “no, I’m going to take a book and READ!” and for a while I even thought about asking for company but then I realize just how much I need to go, R-E-L-A-X and actually do nothing. No reading magazines, no catching up with friends or family, I just want to sit and be comfortable to clear my head space for a few minutes. (Easier said than done, right?!) Side note: Anyone read the book “Eat, Pray, Love”? LOVE IT. (Much better than the movie if you’re wondering.)
So I really hope over the weekend and the next week at some point you can challenge yourself to take 5 minutes, take some deep breathes and clear your mind from the every day clutter! It’s worth it and while I do believe it is a “learned skill” it’s something we don’t do enough. Good Luck!
