Yes, I am a coffee drinker. BUT usually just the one cup a day kind first thing in the morning. It’s the first thing I reach for in the morning and the rule in our house is that I don’t do much of anything before I have my 5 minutes to wake up with my cup of coffee. I don’t even get Luke’s breakfast before this 5 minutes! (He will usually be drinking his cup of milk during this time by the way before you think I’m depriving him!)
I also kind of have a “thing” about my coffee. I hate when people try to “mess” with it. When I’m out and order a coffee I’ll ask for a cappuccino and they ask me if I want whipped cream?! (Even at Starbucks, because a lot of the younger folks who work there really don’t know the difference b/w a latte and a cappuccino!) Every once a while I’ll come across a place that will ask me “do you want it wet or dry?” and it’s music to my ears!
I don’t have any sugar in my coffee but I do like a certain kind of coffee creamer with my cup of coffee in the morning. My preference isn’t any of the super fancy Coffee Mate creamers – it’s just the Hazelnut flavor that does it for me for at home coffee. Recently, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to the chemicals and processed food that our family eats and I’ve begun looking into exactly what I’m pouring into my coffee every morning.
So this is what I’ve found out…The Coffee Mate creamer is absolutely fake cream. To sum it up, it’s pretty much corn syrup, vegetable oil and more artificial “stuff”. Here’s the label for the Hazelnut version that I have.
Either way you look at it, it’s not a great way to start the day! Not to mention that if you’re trying to get pregnant Trans Fats (aka partially hydrogenated oils) is a big NO NO! (It can really mess with your ovulation! For more information check out the book, “The Fertility Diet”) Oh and it’s also worth mentioning that if you do have multiple cups of coffee a day and you have this creamer in your coffee each time, it can be easy to go over the American Heart Association’s recommended 2 gram limit of trans fats before lunch!
Of course, if you don’t have gallons a day and it really makes you happy than by all means this isn’t a plea to get you to stop drinking the one thing that makes you happy in the morning. Trust me, it’s a staple for me as I’m NOT a morning person but I have learned that are other choices! I have tried the soy hazelnut creamer and while it wasn’t undrinkable it was way to much of a change for me to be happy about. So I did try the new “La Creme” and have been using it for the last couple weeks and I have to say this is a change I can be happy about! I had seen the commercials for it but couldn’t find it anywhere…except Wal-Mart. They have 4 flavors: Original, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Cinnamon Vanilla. It does taste a little different, but mainly not as sweet and overall I’m pretty happy about the change! La Creme has a great website with further information about their creamer, which is 100% real milk and cream with naturally flavored, rBST- and lactose-free ingredients it’s a great alternative to a laboratory creation mostly made from water into your coffee!
