Sooo….last weekend we decided to head up to Chicago for a weekend road trip with my Mom, Dad and Grandmother (who’s in town for only two weeks from Arizona). The hubs was “on-call” which worked out because we needed someone to hang out and watch ALL the animals! (Usually, we always luck out and my parents and especially neighbors are chomping at the bit to help out with the horses and/or dogs so going away isn’t usually a problem.)
I love to travel and I’m always thinking about where to go next so being that Luke had never been to Chicago I jumped at the opportunity to go! We ended up getting two connected hotel rooms with my parents and it worked out beautifully, I laid Luke down to sleep in one room and I went into my parents room to hang out until I was ready to go to bed later. By the way, anyone know of a good travel toddler bed? Does it exist? The pack n’ pack just isn’t cutting it for us anymore – Luke was laying diagonally just to stretch his legs out!
Our favorite place we ate at was Portillo’s! They had the best Italian beef, hot dogs and chocolate cake I’ve ever had!
So the next thing we decided to do was to go to Navy Pier before the rain was due to hit us! It was gorgeous and it really made me miss living by the water!
Of course we couldn’t help but get some Garretts popcorn and boy was it good, I’ll definitely be ordering some of that as Christmas gifts this year! Next, some of the others headed to Millennium Park and my dad and I headed to the Children’s Museum at Navy Pier to let Luke run around for a couple hours.
While I really love exposing Luke to new places and experiences what I don’t love exposing him to is…germs. On Tuesday, shortly after we got back from our weekend road trip Luke came down with a cold and it’s gotten progressively worse over the last three days. My super sleeper, who usually takes a 2 hour nap and goes to bed at 7pm, waking up at 7:45am has been up about every hour the last two nights and finally passing out at about 3am and I’ve been lucky if he naps for 45 minutes at a time. There’s nothing worse than when your kids are sick!
I wanted to put his steam humidifier in his room to help him sleep at night but the light and steam really freak him out which I chalk up to a tired, cranky, miserable toddler who cries and has a tantrum at everything you say or want to do to help them. (You should have seen the commotion when I tried to use another pillow to prop him up a little in bed! Yikes!) So I did find a plug in Vicks something or other last night – which didn’t really help much. Today, I asked my mom to get a few groceries I needed while she was out and she managed to pick up a cool mist humidifier with an invisible steam! Did I mention that it had three different speeds and one for super quiet sleeping comfort?! Luke helped me put it together, and with a few drops of Thieves oil in the water he is at last taking a nap that’s been the longest stretch of sleep he’s had in the last three days! Halleluiah!
The best part is that my mom got this amazing cool mist humidifier from Meijer on SALE from $69.99 down to $17.49! What a bargain! So if you’re looking for a new humidifier before flu season hits us – head on out to Meijer, they have great sales going on now!
All in all, we LOVED Chicago and can’t wait to go back for a longer vacation with Daddy! Here’s the photo of the few little things we brought back with us…what you won’t see in this picture is all the cold germs we apparently also picked up somewhere! That’s not a souvenir that we asked for…
Tell me – what’s your favorite cold/flu/sickness product(s) that help you get through when your kiddos are sick? Has anyone else been hit with this horrible summer cold?
