Our family LOVES to be outside, unfortunately this summer we’ve spent more time inside than usual with the HOT weather since I’ve been trying to stay cool through this pregnancy. The last couple weeks have given us a break in the super hot weather and we have been loving every minute of it. We can finally sit outside in comfort without the extreme humidity and heat.
The other thing we’ve missed out on this year has been our annual family vacation. At some point during the year we usually pack everything up and drive (or fly) somewhere for a fun family vacation. Julian and I had planned to take a couples long weekend away in Vegas in Feb for his birthday but I was SO sick at the beginning of this pregnancy we stayed close to home. When Julian took a week off in July we spent it doing multiple “projects” we needed to do at home before this baby girl arrives.
We needed to re-organize a few of the kitchen cupboards! I wanted somewhere out of the way to store my breast pump and any other bottle/pumping supplies so we cleaned out a few spaces and now I have one huge double cupboard to put all that stuff in so it’s not taking up clutter on top of the counters…I can’t stand clutter on my counters! I could easily put piles of “stuff” elsewhere as long as it’s not on my island in my kitchen!
Another big project I wanted to do was organize our basement. We were able to completely re-organize Luke’s clothes and found plastic bins at Big Lots for $5. I was able to pass along so many of Luke’s old clothes to my sister in law and we still ended up with 6-8 bins of baby stuff.
So what have we done to relax (in our spare time! ha!) this summer?? It has felt like a never ending “list” of things to do around here that’s for sure. Julian has been busy doing pretty much all the work outside around the house, barn and horses this summer since I’ve been pregnant and I’ve been scared to lift anything with the unsure diagnosis of the placenta previa (which has now resolved itself completely! yay!). Then, something magical happened….Julian found a pretty inexpensive way to create our own “drive in” style cinema outside! He came across this outdoor movie theater set up and since we already had a projector we thought we’d give it a try since movies have always been a favorite way of ours to relax. It arrived a couple weeks ago and we tried it out for the first time over at my parents house while my two nieces were in town to have an outside family movie under the stars.
The screen was about $200, including the shipping.
The speakers are a $30 computer speaker set that has GREAT sound which we found at Meijer.
You can’t tell from here but I actually had my dad pull out his lazy boy recliner chair outside for me so I could put my feet up! I seem to remember my feet being particularly swollen that day so I was nice and comfy for the movie – better than any cinema, especially because it was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the cooler weather with the family! We ended up keeping the kids up a little later that night (because you have to wait until at least 8:00pm for it get dark enough to see the screen) and watched Wall-E. Everyone loved it. SO much fun and this past weekend Julian set it up for us again on our back deck and we had a movie rental that we had fun watching out under the stars – which is the closest we’ve ever come to a “drive through” type experience. We hope this Fall to invite friends and family over for an outside movie party (with or without the kids it will be a blast!!)!
What have you done to relax this summer?? Has it been busier than usual for you and your family? Anything you are already planning for next summer??
