We finally have been able to put a few of the final finishing touches on both the kid’s rooms and it has been a lot of fun (and work!) to get them finished! Even though we moved Luke into his new room in May there were still a couple things left to hang on the walls! I had originally not planned to change the nursery out of the adorable vintage Winnie The Pooh theme BUT my Mom totally talked me into it, especially when I came across this adorable Owl theme!
The owl theme is by Zutano, and most of it was a gift from my parents which they purchased online. I found the flower hooks at Hobby Lobby and the framed bow holder was a gift from a good friend, Take 10 With Tricia. She takes orders for these, or check out my post on how to make one yourself! They make great shower gifts! The bright pink hooks I found at Jo Ann Fabric and they are wonderful because they don’t require holes in the wall and they stick to just about anything! I love them because they are now making them to look so much cuter than a boring white plastic hook! Perfect for hanging towels out of the way and it keeps the kid’s bathroom clutter free! The ballerina hippo is a play floor mat and my mom and I ended up getting it on sale for dirt cheap the day after we found out we were having a girl! The owl print is something I came across on Etsy and fell in love with it instantly. It’s by Designs By Maya and I cannot say enough great things about her Etsy store and how much it was to work with her! She has the cutest prints for kids rooms that I’ve seen anywhere…for boys and girls. I especially loved the message on the owl print, click on the picture below to go directly to her site and check out her other great prints!
There have been quite a few DIY projects I’ve done in her room overall, including the bow holder, the crib rail protector (SUPER easy using fleece material to cut and tie – I used the directions HERE), making a new matching basket liner for the diaper basket on top of her dresser and….the curtains. I had purchased these bright pink blackout curtains that were terrible and didn’t block out ANY of the light. I got so frustrated that I decided to make my own. I remember many years ago my mom gave me my own sewing “kit” and she had hoped one day we be able to spend more time together, teaching me how to use a sewing machine. At the time I wondered if I would ever use the sewing kit and now I am SO thankful to have it and I am constantly taking over new sewing projects to her for help! Sewing was something I was un-sure I would ever get into and now both myself and sister-in-law are always doing a sewing project! It’s no wonder my mom now has three sewing machines set up for us!
I saved SO much money making my own black out curtains and with coupons to Jo Ann fabrics was able to pay for all the materials for the curtains for a fraction of the cost of purchasing curtains. I found material I liked and then purchased the black out material from Jo Ann’s. I following the directions on this blog and liked that the black out material is sew in at the top of the curtain so it hangs really nicely with the fabric and it is nice and thick – enough to make the room DARK even first thing in the morning when the sun is super bright at the front of the house. With my Mom’s expertise these curtains came together easily and quickly!
Check out these adorable curtain tie backs, from the Baby Angel Faces store on Etsy! They are so adorable and I love that you don’t have to drill any holes in the wall when you want to pull the curtains back to give some light into the room! They are held with strong magnets and ribbon and have no problems holding the thick black out material with the fabric! She has all kinds of curtain tie backs that you check out on her website that range in price from $5 to $12! Can’t beat the price and ease of use for these tie backs! Jennie will also be posting about the tie backs she got for both the boy’s rooms!
