Family pictures have always meant a lot to me. My parents were pretty good about taking lots of pictures of us as kids, the places we went and things we did. My parents didn’t have a lot of fancy baby books or special family albums, instead they had three paper bags with pictures for my two older brothers and I that were specific to us. I loved that they gave us each our own set of pictures of things we did as kids that meant a lot to us.
It’s easy to feel like we should always be doing more….fill out those baby books, make those photo books, calendars, diaries, you name it! In reality I think ANYTHING you can do for your kids is great, we put so much pressure on ourselves to do more and keep up with the latest and greatest ways to document our kids growing up. Actually, the best thing you can do for your kids is to just simply take pictures. That’s it. BUT, here’s the catch: BE IN THEM! I know, I know you would rather be the one behind the camera sometimes! Trust me, I am ultra picky about the pictures I’m in – I have some more baby weight to lose and we all have things about ourselves we would rather not keep on film! Here’s the thing, your kids don’t care! All they want is pictures to look back on with you IN THEM!
A while back, when my grandmother was in town right after Emma was born I had a 4-generation picture taken. While I love to look at this picture of us all, it’s mostly for a keepsake for my daughter. Something to hand down to her to continue with the tradition! This picture is what started the tradition of my great-grandmother, grandmother, my mother and me when I was baby!
And I LOVE this one with my mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and my two brothers and me, as a baby! When I look at this picture it really brings me so much joy to see us all so happy in that moment! Yes, of course my mom looks and this and thinks her hair was crazy, what was she wearing, etc. All I care about is that we’re all in the picture!
So please don’t forget to get out from BEHIND that camera and get in those pictures with your kids! They will thank you for it when they are grown and have kids of their own to look back on such great memories you made.
