Whoever said Breastfeeding is easy?! Don’t let this picture fool you….getting here has been a long hard road! When I was pregnant with Emma I wondered and hoped that it would be better, easier the second time around. With Luke, I lasted about 6 months breastfeeding and then formula fed until 12 months. I’ve done both and I’m here to tell you “Good Job Mama!” Whether you have chosen to use formula or have been forced to use formula because breastfeeding was HARD, we are all doing the best we can and that Mom guilt can be brutal. Motherhood is not perfect and we spend ALL of it trying to do the best things for our children.
I have been exclusively breastfeeding Emma for 10.5 months now and let me tell you….only now has it really gotten somewhat “easy”. I have worried about my supply from the minute she was born and even then her latch wasn’t perfect because she has a mild lip tie. Breastfeeding is painful when you have little clenched gums biting down and pulling on your nipples as hard as they can, never mind teeth. Breastfeeding is making sure you are eating healthy so you can feed your baby. Breastfeeding is sometimes dealing with clogged milk ducts or even mastitis when you tried to skip just one feeding to go to dinner with the girls. Breastfeeding is using a mild torture device made of plastic to try and trick your milk to “let down” so you can capture that liquid gold and maintain a good milk supply, sleep without waking up in wet sheets, and leave an extra bottle in the freezer so you can maybe even sleep longer than 45 mins. Breastfeeding is worrying how much your little one is actually getting and then obsessing over why one side produces WAY more than the other and if you have enough milk to feed your baby! Breastfeeding is being brave…in the midst of being apart of a society who feels like you are giving them a “boob shot” instead of what you are actually doing – feeding your baby, the way our bodies were designed. It amazes me that we can proudly show our bodies in a bikini but we feel like we need to cover up to actually feed our babies. For some reason, we are worried about offending people instead of doing the right thing to educate about the importance of breastfeeding. All in all….it is work.
I have been so thankful for LBV Baby for capturing this small beautiful moment in time with Emma. After all the WORK it is so important to stop and smell the roses and realize all the benefits of breastfeeding. It is a bond that ties us together in an unspeakable way, with the pay off and reward being oh so worth it all. Erin manages to work with babies and families to bring out their personality and capture the “real life” portraits you will cherish for a lifetime.
