I learned two new things this week at our Little Gym class – how important the Vestibular and Proprioceptive systems are and how they play a very large role in developing toddlers. In a nutshell, these two systems work hand in hand to help our bodies balance which is important to think about as our toddlers are learning continued body awareness. There are lots of fun activities you can do at home to have fun while practicing balance with your little ones. My favorite activity we did at The Little Gym this week was doing forward rolls on the balance beam. Notice how Emma naturally grabs on to the beam to stabilize herself in the video below – this is the Vestibular (the fluid filled inner ear canal system) and Proprioceptive System (the sensation of joint and muscle movement) working at their best to let her know she needs to “hold on”!
Be sure to check out the cool Summer Camps at The Little Gym in Mason if you are local – they have some fantastic themes that are not only fun but you can bet you’ll get the same quality of educational fun activities you’ve come to know and love!
